Tremendous opportunities still exist in internet marketing, even today. It’s just a matter of finding the right marketing approach for your online business. Of course, social media is the new darling of the internet marketing world with the likes of Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, Pinterest and a host of other social media platforms. But let’s not forget old standards like email marketing, pay per click, pay per impression advertising and so on.  All of these approaches are viable and can be effective in bringing in plenty of traffic if done correctly. But how do you get that traffic to convert?

Starting at Home: Making Sure Your Marketing Ship Is Seaworthy

The first place you will want to start is right with your website itself Make sure it is optimized and up to snuff. After all, you want to convert that traffic into sales

internet marketing . Check to see how your site loads in different browsers.  Little changes can go a long way toward improving your conversion rate. For example, images on your site that are very large can consume a lot of browser resources and slow down your site’s upload time. Also too many plug-ins, though helpful in many ways, will have the same effect. The over use of Flash, videos and animation will also slow down your site’s load time. These are just a few examples but I’m sure you get the picture. Trim the fat where needed to get your upload speed up as this problem can actually affect your Google ranking.

Make sure you are using original and unique content on your site. While it’s ok to quote someone from time to time, it is never good to duplicate content found elsewhere for the sake of saving time or because you like their content. While is good to take look at what your top competitors are doing for your own brainstorming, make sure your content is and unique. Otherwise you run the risk of being penalized by Google for duplicate content and thus seeing your pages rank poorly in searches. Look at your keywords frequently and see how they are performing. Are you going for a keyword that is too competitive? Do your keyword research and choose keywords with low to moderate competition with good search volume. Re-evaluate your onsite SEO from time to time.

Focus on your landing pages and the pages that really bring in the dough- your money pages! Concentrate. Make sure that you are creating internal links from every other page to your money pages. Be sure to link to them from your terms and conditions page, about page, privacy page, etc. Sure these policy and disclaimer pages are important but they are not direct sellers. But by linking them to your sales pages you are essentially adding more bread crumbs and pointers to your money pages – USE THEM TO YOUR ADVANTAGE! This will also help Google to better crawl your important pages.

Off-Site SEO for Better Search Results

Remember when your mother warned you about hanging out with those bad kids? The same applies here. However, here it is being applied to offsite SEO and backlink building. Make sure you are linking to quality sites relevant to your own. The higher the quality and relevancy of the site pointing to yours, the better yours will perform. Do not settle for low quality links in bad neighborhoods that have little to do with your own. I know it is difficult to always get links from your own niche but at least make sure they do not come from spam sites. Also link diversity is important. Get both no-follow and do-follow links and also links from different sources, i.e., blogs, web 2.0 properties, forums, social bookmarking, etc. In other words mix them up for a cleaner, more natural link profile.

A great tip for internet marketing is to get your web site and sales letters evaluated by others. Sometimes it’s good to evaluate your site through the eyes of others. Ask friends, colleagues or even members from the various forums and discussion groups you belong to if they would critique your website. This is a great way to get a free, independent evaluation of your site and also a fantastic means for getting new insights and ideas for improved marketing strategies. I know it sounds simple but it’s effective.

 Marketing Basics Revisited

Use promotions to create a buzz about your business and to increase website traffic. Offer discounts for new customers and returning customers alike. Maybe give something away with a purchase of a certain product or service! Make these offers prominent in your emailing and newsletters to your subscriber lists. This can help you drive more traffic to your website/online business. Everybody likes something for free or at a discount. Need more ideas?  The old cliché applies here- think outside the box.

Understanding your demographics and your customer plays a big part in your marketing strategy. Are you targeting women over the 50 interested in health issues or are the 18-25 crowds more into tech? Your site should reflect the customer base you are going after in theme, design, offering, etc. Consider information such as your customer demographics as well as the reasons they may visit your site. Make targeting your traffic a priority.

Now back to some of the internet marking tools discussed at the beginning of this post.  Use them all or use some – experiment. Is pay per click more productive for your business? Perhaps a focus on social media will pay bigger dividends for you. Or maybe for your niche it’s purchasing targeted traffic through a service. You have to experiment to see what is the best approach or mix of approaches. But just remember to target your audience so you are not all over the place and wasting your hard-earned money. Focus on your demographics and give them what they are looking for.
