Rule 1: Make Your Customers Happy

You should value not just your time but also that of other people. That means do not bombard people with constant useless emails.  Sending emails once a week or even every other week is a much better approach then sending out emails everyday or more often.  The more often you send emails, the more likely recipients are to unsubscribe. In some cases less is really more!

Make sure that whatever claims your make in your ad is verifiable. Don’t just say things because they sound good or you think they can boost your sales. Don’t forget, this is the age of Google- anything can be checked out in nanoseconds. Plus, if you want your business to be taken seriously you have to present it as such. One good way to win over a new customer is to provide a link to a third party site that can easily verify whatever your are claiming. This way it becomes a fact and not hype.

Respond to your customers’ emails promptly.  There is nothing more irritating then having to wait days for an answer to something that is often very simple. Yes, it can be mundane and time-consuming but as a professional and business person, you must take the time to communicate with customers and future customers in a timely fashion. If you do not, they will simply take their business elsewhere. Never take even the smallest customer for granted.  Once you go done that path, it may be hard to recover.

Gotta Get Mobile…

Going mobile. There is a trend toward mobile computing that you should not ignore as a savvy internet marketer.  More and more people are ditching their desktops and opting for mobile devices. It won’t be long before the majority of us are accessing the internet through mobile devices.  Make sure your website is mobile enabled and ready for the millions who are accessing the internet via their smart phones, iPads and the like. The Follow-up Is Just as Important as the Sale – Maybe More !

Remember that the sale is not complete just because you sold something.  The post sale follow up is crucial to customer retention and satisfaction.  Send your customer a thank you email and include an offer or discount on future purchases. This is how you build customer loyalty. Build your mailing list from satisfied customers and follow-up every couple of months to let them know what’s new on your site or offer them incentives to shop again with you.  And don’t forget, if someone asks you to remove them from your mailing list, do so right away. It’s not the end of the world. If they had a good experience they may still come back and buy again. Some people just do not like marketing emails.

If It’s Free It’s for Me

Everyone likes something for free.  So when you send out products to your customers send some freebies along with them. You can often buy them in bulk through wholesale outfits for very little. These can be anything to a free t-shirts, pens or sports bottles, for example. Not only does this create good will and customer loyalty but, by personalizing them with your business name or logo, you are also creating free advertising for yourself.

Don’t Turn ‘Em Off

 If you plan on making big changes to your site or its layout, make sure your give your customers a heads up.  There is nothing more annoying or frustrating then going to your favorite site and finding that you have to relearn its navigation. By planning ahead and keeping your viewers informed you lessen any potential shock.  Make sure that your pages remain user-friendly no matter what you do.

Stand out from the crowd.  Use attention grabbing headlines and sub headlines on your site to get visitors to read the rest of your ad! Your page layout and copy must catch people’s attention if they are to look further into what you are offering.  If your page is boring or provides useless information, people will not hang around long. So keep it fresh and interesting!

Keep the noise down. By that I mean all those gadgets, bells and whistles, etc. Keep your website clean and focused. You don’t need every plug in or fancy template out there. Too many useless and cluttering widgets will only put people off. Keep your site focused on things that are relevant to your overall theme. A clean page not only is inviting but also conveys certain professionalism.
